Old and New at Stone Barns

You know you’re getting close to Stone Barns when the rolling green fields open up on both sides of the street, only interrupted by rustic stone walls lining the road, and occasionally intersecting the fields to demarcate grazing lines or property lines, which may or may not be relevant today.  Then you see the driveway, marked by a dark, sophisticated-looking stone sign.  It’s fit for both a 3-star Michelin restaurant and a farm, which is exactly what Stone Barns is; Blue Hill at Stone Barns is Dan Barber’s 3-star Michelin restaurant, ranked 11th in the world, and the non-profit Stone Barns Center for Agriculture is an educational farm running a renowned apprenticeship program and defining best practices in agriculture across the board.

The feeling of pulling up to Stone Barns has a bit of surrealism to it.  Somewhere between The Shire from Lord of the Rings, and Hogwarts from Harry Potter, the silo and barn tower over the property, deep brown colors with hearty gambrel roofs, but a certain elegance to the whole thing as well.  Old and new collide, and the outcome is nothing short of enchanting.
